production montage

invitation design

Here is the final invitation design that I completed for the end of year screening. Several months ago here was an email sent out to every film and animation student to submit designs for the screening. I was the only person to submit anything. I should not have been surprised. At the screening meeting obviously my designs were not what they were looking for, so they extended the submission date for another further two weeks. Still no one submitted anything so I ended up in a 'design committee' with 5 other film students to design the invitation. I set up a meeting to get things going with the film student. We discussed several ideas and this is what we came up with. The whole design was to say creativity fun and feel fresh in a way. Film and animation is a very creative medium so I think it was very appropriate. While finalizing the the design I got feed back that there was not any emphasis on film aspect in the design and it was too graphic design and 'animation' orientated. So to fix that I put a blue film strip in the background. I spent over 20 working hours and more over a period of a few weeks. That was just in designing it using Illustrator and photoshop.

Colour research for the overall feel of the film. I went to the website http://www.colourlovers.com. its great community totally devoted to colour!

more building design for the outpost area. I studeied various buildings designs and created these design with desert materials that would have been used to make these buildings.

a building design before and after it has been destroyed. the oupost will be populated with various weatherd buildings. I added the robot in for size comparison.

using photoshop I painted over an Occlusion render of the terrain. this was to help find the visual style that we were looking for.

I have done a lot of research on bikes and in bike books. I first started with the Silhouette to get interesting shapes. I then did a more detail study on the mechanical structure of the motor bike. Here is some image that I have worked on over the past week.

I just looked at this book called ‘Liftoff’. Its all about concept art of fantastical vehicles and flying machines. It’s a stunning book from Designstudiospress. Check out the other books at this link http://www.designstudiopress.com/

I found this image on istockphoto.com. I like the top the guys wearing. This could be a good design to base the main character on.

Here are some early character silhouettes. I have focused on the costume here. I kept all designs pretty close to the bodies. Trying various pieces that might be appropriate for desert wear. Another criterion was no flowing cloth. The reason for this is the difficulties of controlling animated cloth and also the incredibly long render time.

I found this on the web(link below). I really like this image because of the differing colours on the ground and the sky is just an incredible blue.
